Walker Morris’s Major Win |
| Walker Morris have won a complex legal battle on behalf of Hotel Cipriani this week.
The luxurious Venice-based Hotel Cipriani took legal action against the original Cipriani family for using the name in their London based restaurant chain. The family sold their claim to the Hotel Cipriani chain over forty years ago. The hotel’s owners, Orient Express Hotel’s Group, sought Walker Morris’s advice in protecting its trademark.
No doubt Walker Morris’s already prestigious Intellectual Property reputation stood them in good stead in the hotel’s choice, having acted for clients such as Nokia and Habitat earlier this year. An independent study named the firm “the ‘best of the best’ in trademark negotiations and infringements.”
In a hearing lasting nine days, Mr Justice Arnold ruled that the Cipriani family can no longer use the name “Cipriani” or “Cipriani of London” for their restaurant chain.
